5 Causes of Roof Leaks and Why You Shouldn’t Put Off Repairs

The thought of getting out a bucket and placing it under a leak is not very fun to most people. There are lots of things that can lead to a roof springing a leak, and we are going to share 5 of those possibilities with you. We hope that this list can serve as a reminder to get your roof inspected and repaired, so you do not have to deal with these problems in your home. If you live in or around the DFW Metroplex and fear your roof is ready to spring a leak, give First Out Roofing a call.

1. Old Age

Over time, your roof will naturally lose its ability to keep water out. Overexposure to sunlight, cold weather, heat and water will deteriorate the materials on your roof. Cracking in shingles and melting of asphalt and tar will make your roof weak and more susceptible to forming holes, thus letting in water during rainfall. It is important to know the lifespan of your roof so you’ll know if it is time for a replacement.

2. Backed Up Gutters

Clogged gutters can prevent the flow of water off your roof, allowing it to build up and seep into your roofing materials. Too much moisture sitting on top of your roof is another way holes can form on your rooftop. Getting your gutters thoroughly cleaned before heavy rain seasons will prevent them from backing up and damaging your roof.

3. Missing Shingles

Missing shingles expose more parts of your roof directly to the elements, which can do further damage to your roofing materials. Rainwater will wash away asphalt and other protective layers that typically sit under shingles. Have a professional patch up missing shingles to lower your chances of leaks forming.

4. Debris Build-ups

When leaves and twigs build up on your roof, they often have moisture trapped inside them. While they are sitting up there, they slowly expel that moisture, putting it directly onto your roofing materials. Build-ups of debris can also hinder water runoff, letting even more moisture sit stagnant on your roof!

5. Lifting Nails

Nails that hold down roofing materials will naturally begin to lift over time. When those nails lift and eventually fall out, they leave behind small holes. Rainwater will fall directly into those holes, and can eventually seep under other materials, loosening them up as well. These small holes can be hard to spot on your own. A professional inspection is the best way to find those small flaws and to prevent leaks.

First Out Roofing: Fixing DFW Roofs Before They Spring a Leak

There are many small things that can eventually lead to your roof having a major leak. Tiny holes and excess build-ups are culprits, and so are missing and damaged materials. Putting off repairs only encourages these problems to get worse. Stop your leaks before they even start by calling in a professional roof inspector.
