About Allen, TX
Allen was originally part of the Caddo and Comanche territory in North Texas, and was added to the Peter’s Colony Land Grant by the Republic of Texas. European immigrants began arriving in the 1840’s, looking for free land to settle. There was conflict between the tribes and the settlers until 1844, a date commemorated by a historic marker along State Highway 5. Travel was largely accomplished by horse and stagecoach in those days, but it wasn’t long before the Texas Central Railroad arrived in 1872.
Allen has the dubious honor of being the site of the first train robbery in Texas on February 22, 1878. The infamous train robber Sam Bass and his gang of outlaws robbed the train and then retreated to their hideout, which was only a short distance from Allen.
The Texas Traction Company purchased land on the west side of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad track with plans to add Allen as a stop along the Denison-Dallas train route. This would have led to a population boom, but a rampant fire in 1915 destroyed most of Allen’s business district. By 1950, Allen’s population declined to just 400 people.
Today, Allen is a northern suburb of Dallas with a population of about 100,000. Incorporated as a city in 1953, it has grown with the development of I-75 and the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Allen is largely residential, though it does boast several premier shopping destinations and the Allen Event Center, which is home to the Dallas Sidekicks major arena soccer team.
Allen Roofing Concerns
The biggest dangers to Allen roofs are hail and high wind. Both are common occurrences during the stormy season between March and May, and both can cause devastating damage that requires a rapid response. Allen’s North Texas location puts it at the southern end of Tornado Alley, the part of the US that gets the most tornadoes and severe storms each year. We recommend having a professional roof inspection after major storms pass through your neighborhood.
