Does Your Home Need Roof Ventilation?
Many roofs and attics are vented to help encourage ventilation throughout the home. However, your current ventilation system still may not be sufficient. Proper roof ventilation will help with climate and temperature control, lengthen your roof’s lifespan, and lower the risk of damage. A properly designed roof helps eliminate moisture in your attic– preventing mold and mildew from growing there.
Why do you need roof vents?
Roof vents are especially important in homes with attics and basements without climate control. Roof ventilation helps keep your roof cool during the hot Texas summers, stops the metal on your roof from overexpanding, and slows the aging of shingles. It’s the key to releasing pent-up heat and moisture from your home.
How does roof ventilation work?
Natural ventilation uses the stack and wind effect to allow air to flow throughout the attic. The stack effect refers to when hot air rises in the attic causing high pressure on the roof. Then, exhaust aka hot air needs to escape. It can only do so though if there’s a way for cool air to enter and replace it. This is called the intake, and it’s encouraged by wind hitting the roof. Both intake and exhaust are important for proper natural air circulation.
Extend your roof’s life
Extreme winter weather isn’t that common in Texas. However, when turbulent winter storms do hit it tends to bring devastation along with it. We certainly saw that when Winter Storm Uri arrived in February. The storm swept down from the North wreaking havoc on roofs, plumbing, electrical work, and roadways. Many people who experienced roof damage during the storm can attribute it to ice damming. The ice build-up on their roofs and gutters due to heat from the home and sun melting and the snow, and then low temps refreezing it can cause extensive damage to your roof and attic. Proper ventilation will allow your home to heat the roof and avoid roof damage. Likewise, if there’s too much heat rising, but it can’t escape you’ll have an extremely hot attic and the heat will ruin the shingles from the inside out.
Your energy bill is high
Proper roof ventilation will help keep your energy bill low. A roof with an efficient ventilation system allows heat to escape from your home. Naturally, your home will be cooler and require less energy from your air conditioner. Aside from the cost-benefit, it will also be a more comfortable climate for you to live in.
